Several Air Force Sabreliners and KC-135 tankers are waiting on the flight line of Vandenberg AFB.
We had arrived while the Olympic Arena annual missile competition was wrapping up. Wing Commanders and Squadron commanders and crew members who had been prepping for this prestigious competition for the better part of the previous year would take these aircraft back to their Titan and Minuteman missile bases at the conclusion of the competition. We were just hitching a ride to Vandenberg on the tanker that would take the Minot competitors back home.
The Olympic Arena competition would toss all kinds of alert problems at the crews, most not likely to occur in a real alert environment. The winning crew would bring a fancy trophy and prestige to his base, for a year anyway. The winning crews would likely be upgraded to the instructor shop or the stand board evaluation shop after the competition, especially if they did well during the competition.
