The exact year the parents and we two kids drove to Monterrey, CA, to visit friends of mom and dad I cannot say. It could have been 1954 or 1955, judging from how young we look in the bottom photograph. The husband was in the service, the Marines, I believe. We would visit them again when they were stationed at El Toro Marine base in the early 60's.
The ride itself, along California Highway 1 was terrible for us kids in the backseat. In those days, it probably twisted and turned along the coast even more than today. We became carsick repeatedly. When dad would stop at a rustic tavern or bar along the way to get sodas for us to settle our stomachs, we'd keep the cups just in case we puked again. Which we repeatedly did all the way to Monterrey.
We enjoyed the actual visit because their two sons were fun. Neither of us recalls how we returned to Southern California, but I suspect we took an inland highway rather than return by the coastal road.
