National Airlines DC-8, LAX, 6/10/67

Mike and I had become very good friends in high school. I think I got him interested in aircraft and flying. Fifteen days before graduation, the two of us took a bus to LAX for a short flight on National Airlines to San Diego. We intended to spend the day at the San Diego Zoo. This would become the first of many flights that we would talk one another into taking well into college--we almost never told our parents what we were up to since we knew they would not approve. We had taken a bus to LAX earlier that year, to take pictures of many different aircraft at the time, which I will soon share. Here we are walking down one of the ramps at one of the domestic terminals which was home to National and Delta Airlines before jetways became the prevalent means to directly enter a passenger aircraft from a terminal.

As you can see, I snapped the bottom photograph just before we entered the DC-8 after climbing up the stairs. Fares in those days were cheap: $5.38 or $6.00 one way. At the South Gate Rod & Gun Club where we both worked for a time, making $1.25 per hour, I stayed there longer than Mike did, even though we both hated the job and were thrilled to find other work after high school graduation.
